What is Coaching?

Coaching varies from Coach to Coach of course. The Coaching model I use is all about self-directed learning which means that, unlike mentoring, I don’t tell you what you should do. Even if you don’t realise it, you have most of the answers and I help you to unlock those so you feel more empowered. In addition, I will of course offer suggestions along the way.

“How far does your mind go before it needs mine?”

-Nancy Kline-

Mentoring is valuable when this is what you do want, e.g., when you start a new role.

In Coaching, we establish your goals together, explore what has been happening and where you want to get to and then I help you to make a road map to get there and how to overcome the blocks that have been holding you back.

One question I get asked all the time:
“What’s the difference between coaching, mentoring, counselling and training?”

Coaching

Coaching focuses on who you and where you are today and who and where you want to be going forward.
It focuses on where you are today and how you are being. Furthermore, on your desired outcome,  where you want to be. And, what you need to do and how you need to be to achieve that.

Often, people want to work on a mindset shift to push through feeling stuck or overwhelmed.

How does it work?

We establish your expectations of me from the outset, for instance; how firmly you want me to challenge you if you seem to be “getting in your own way”; what (if any) accountability you want, etc.

Coaching does not focus on the past, as counselling may. As a coach, I help you to gain clarity and a deeper understanding of what’s involved to reach your vision. Also, greater self-awareness and motivation to achieve your desired outcome by helping you to find your own answers. I do of course make suggestions from time to time, if I believe they would be useful.

I work with driven entrepreneurs and professionals who want to enhance their communication skills to achieve greater success. Whether they are feeling frustrated or simply want to refine their abilities, they recognise that effective communication is essential to unlocking their success. Having been an entrepreneur myself for over 20 years now through highs and lows, I can help you to come through too!

You will always have a solution to any challenge (even if it isn’t apparent). I ask a series of powerful questions to “unlock” these from the sub-conscious mind, and hold space for you to let these emerge.

Mentoring

This is a relationship between an individual with experience in a particular field and a person within the same field who is looking for guidance to learn and grow in that field.  The mentor shares his experience and knowledge, acts as a sounding board, advises.  There may be achievement goals set by the mentor or learner.  The achievement of these goals can bring about new goals to help the learner gain more insight and advance in their career.  There may be some awareness of the character of the learner that comes out of the mentoring relationship, but this is not the focus.

Performance Management

This is the monitoring of the achievement of goals of a person.  Performance management may be by an experienced or inexperienced person in the field.   There is not necessarily a defined relationship between the person working to achieve the goals and the person monitoring the achievement.

Counselling

This can be related to therapy-based assistance that uses psychological methods (and sometimes tools and methods very similar to those of coaching). Counselling may use techniques that focus on the understanding of past situations to help deal with current situations.  There is some understanding of who the person being counselled is (qualities and characteristics that arise in coaching as well).  The counsellor tends to gain an understanding of the situation and the person, and then helps the person to explore their options on next steps of growth.

Training

This is the teaching of a specific task or objective.  This is usually provided individually or in groups.  The trainer may or may not have a further relationship with the trainees.  The trainer provides specific instructional information regarding a specific topic.  Training usually has specific steps or routines to follow in order to achieve the desired goals e.g. 5 ways to become a more effective speaker.  It does not look at the intrinsic qualities of the trainees that could assist him/her in achieving the training objective, as coaching would.

There are definitely overlaps between the various disciplines.  To better serve our clients, we work to clarify when we are coaching, mentoring, counselling or training to help them gain the full benefits from each.
