Last week’s Thought for the Week was; “The Art of an Open Heart” about how the art of listening is a transformative skill that influences relationships on various levels. If you missed it, feel free to catch up HERE.
This week, let’s dive into a crucial aspect of communication that goes hand-in-hand with effective listening and can elevate your ability to influence with grace and authenticity.
Have you ever found yourself in a position where you need someone to do something for you, and you wonder about the best way to approach it? The distinction between persuasion and influence plays a pivotal role, not just in communication styles but also in the outcomes you achieve.
When it comes to influencing, it’s about fostering a genuine connection and respect, rather than pushing or coercing. If you manage people or interact with suppliers, the way you approach requests matters significantly.
Consider a scenario where you’ve asked someone to go beyond their usual duties, and they respond with a “no”. How you handle this moment can determine not only the immediate outcome but also the future dynamics of your relationship.
Here’s a powerful tip for turning a potential “no” into a reconsideration:
Instead of asking a potentially confrontational “Why can’t you do it?” try framing it with; “I was really hoping you could help me with that. May I ask the reason you can’t this time?”
This subtle shift makes a world of difference. It communicates your genuine hope for assistance, owning the request, and shows respect by inquiring about the reason rather than casting judgment.
And remember that less is more.
“A single question can be more influential than a thousand statements.”
