I hope this message finds you well. Last week’s Thought for the Week was; “Navigating Tough Talks” about handling challenging discussions with grace and empathy. If you missed it, feel free to catch up HERE.
As we navigate the challenges of the week, I wanted to share a thought that many of us can relate to: handling interruptions gracefully, especially when you’re eager to express yourself.
The Talking stick, used in many Indigenous cultures, is an ancient and powerful “communication tool” that ensures a code of conduct of respect during meetings is followed. The person holding the stick, and only that person, is designated as having the right to speak and all others must listen quietly and respectfully.
In our environment, how we handle these interruptions speaks volumes about our communication skills and our ability to navigate challenging situations gracefully.
In our professional and personal lives, interruptions are inevitable. Whether it’s during a team meeting, a crucial presentation, or a one-on-one conversation, there are times when we find ourselves yearning to say, “Let me finish!” So, how do we maintain composure and navigate interruptions with grace?
Consider this: Interruptions can stem from enthusiasm, differing communication styles, or simply a desire to contribute. While it might be tempting to react defensively, there’s an opportunity to respond thoughtfully.
Tips for Handling Interruptions:
Understanding Interruptions: Interrupting someone mid-sentence can be perceived as rude, but it’s essential to recognise that interruptions often stem from enthusiasm or a genuine desire to contribute. Rather than reacting defensively, consider it an opportunity to foster collaboration and effective communication.
Maintain Composure: Instead of letting frustration take the lead and you find yourself yearning to say, “Let me finish,” maintain your composure. Respond in a calm and collected manner, acknowledging the interruption while expressing your intention to finish your thought.
Empathise: Empathy plays a crucial role in diffusing tension. Try to understand the perspective of the interrupter. Acknowledge their input and find common ground. This approach not only addresses the interruption but also builds a foundation for more effective communication.
Establish Boundaries: In a team environment, in a respectful manner, we can establish boundaries for effective communication. Let others know when it’s most appropriate to interject and when you’d prefer to finish your point before entertaining additional input. Creating an open dialogue about communication preferences within your team can contribute to a more harmonious and collaborative environment.
Encourage Open Communication: Effective communication is a collaborative effort. Encourage open dialogue about communication preferences within your team or group. Everyone should feel comfortable sharing their thoughts on how to navigate interruptions constructively.
“Those moments where we are interrupted are often the moments we learn the most about grace”
-Journeys in Grace-
Remember; effective communication is a two-way street. While asserting your need to finish a thought is important, so is fostering an environment where everyone feels heard and valued.
In conclusion, handling interruptions with grace requires a blend of self-awareness, empathy, and effective communication. By approaching interruptions as opportunities for collaboration, we can build stronger, more cohesive relationships in both our professional and personal lives.
