Thought for the Week – Power of Purpose

IkigaiWelcome back!

In the tapestry of human experience, purpose stands as a guiding thread, weaving together the moments of our lives with intention and significance. Last week, we explored the deep impact of genuine connections, and this week, we turn our gaze to the transformative power of purpose.

You can catch up on last week’s blog here

In the Japanese culture they have a work in their vocabulary that summarises this where, interestingly, the English language does not. In Japan, “Ikigai” means “A reason to get out of bed in the morning”.

Purpose is more than just a goal or ambition; it’s the driving force behind our actions, the beacon that illuminates our path, and the foundation upon which we build our legacy. It infuses meaning into our endeavours, gives direction to our aspirations, and imbues our lives with a sense of fulfilment and satisfaction.

Whether it’s finding meaning in our work, nurturing relationships with loved ones, or contributing to causes greater than ourselves, purpose gives rise to a sense of connection and belonging that transcends the boundaries of time and space.

In a world often fraught with uncertainty and chaos, purpose serves as our North Star, guiding us through life’s challenges and inspiring us to persevere in the pursuit of our dreams. It reminds us of our inherent worth and potential, urging us to step boldly into the world and make a difference in the lives of others.

Purpose ignites our passions, fuels our ambitions, and infuses meaning into every aspect of our existence, including what we convey in conversations.

Whether it’s pursuing a career that aligns with our values, advocating for causes close to our hearts, or simply being there for those we love, purpose infuses our actions with intention and significance.

As we navigate the ebbs and flows of life, let’s remember the profound power of purpose to illuminate our path, enrich our experiences, and leave a lasting legacy of impact.

If you have a clear purpose that excites you, you are one of the few because many don’t . So, if you don’t have your own personal “Ikigai”, I invite you to list the ten most important areas of your life that you either have now or want to have in the future, then put them in order of priority according to how important it is to you.

Then, take your No.1 priority and rate …

  • How excited you are to achieve this on a scale of 1 to 10?
  • How happy does it make you feel about achieving this on a scale of 1 to 10?
  • How much difference will it make to you and those around you on a scale of 1 to 10?

If it is not a 10, is it the most important? Is there something else that excites you a big 10 out of 10?

Once you have your 10/10 priority, then sum it up in a maximum of 5 words, or it could be an image in your mind, or even a symbol of some kind. Hold that dear to you and focus on it every day (you may even have it somewhere you will see it when you wake up each morning!).

Notice how different you feel when you have your own personal “Ikigai”!

Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.”

I will leave you with that thought and wish you a purpose-driven week ahead.
