Last week’s Thought for the Week was; “Who Will you Ride with in the Limo?” This was about spending most of our time, whenever we can, with those who accept us for who we are, inspire us, help us grow and we can be ourselves with.
You can see this and all of my previous blogs below.
- Whether you are an Entrepreneur who is at the seed stage or your business is growing into something amazing and taking off;
- Whether you are an Executive, Manager, Team Leader or Team Member working for a larger organisation;
- Whether you are an independent Consultant or other Professional …
In all cases, to succeed, you will have to grow your network, accept challenges, take risks, be ready to learn from your mistakes and keep the ball rolling.
And asking for help is vital to growing your business and career.
Yet, many professional people are hesitant to seek the help they need. Asking for assistance doesn’t make us less capable – we want to be able to go to colleagues and / or seniors for support.
Some will say that coaches and mentors are the only way forward, they are impartial and extremely convenient. And … if you have the right Coach or Mentor, they will ride on the bus with you if the limo breaks down! (You will recognise that from last week).
Working with the right Coach or Mentor can only add to you achieving the success you are striving for. What’s the difference between Coaching and Mentoring? Read HERE

In any case, in the same vein as last week’s thought, you want to surround yourself with talented people!
One of the most profound things I have learned as an entrepreneur and through working with business professionals is this;
“Hire people to work with you who show the most talent and drive and who may even be smarter than you!”
There’s humility and wisdom in that and, let’s face it; no matter how good you are at building and running a company, you can’t do it all by yourself.
Have you ever heard someone say; “You are who you hang out with?” If you have kids, you probably worry about them falling in with the wrong crowd (and your parents worried about the same for you!).
That’s because those we spend the most time with have a huge influence on us and our moods, how we view the World and the expectations we have of ourselves and others.
This is known as “The Power of Proximity”
So, why don’t we use this it to our own advantage?
When we surround ourselves with positivity, we’re more likely to adopt empowering beliefs and see life as happening for us, rather than to us.
Just as we benefit when we surround ourselves with people who make us unhappy, sadly we suffer when those in our business or social circles are negative or narrow-minded.
So, we need to frequently remind ourselves that who we spend the most time with is who we eventually become. And, to reach new heights of success, we must surround ourselves with people who not only inspire us, but also challenge us in a positive way. It isn’t always easy, but it’s worth it.
I mentioned a few weeks back that, when I was in a leadership role in the British Airways Training Department, I found an operational manager difficult to be around. Only by arranging to have a coffee and chat did we find common ground and that resulted in an extremely positive and empowering partnership for both of us.
Of course, it doesn’t always work out like that. If not, then we have to navigate our way to be around those positive and inspiring people as much as possible. And this could be online as much as in person.
If you want to know more about this, here’s a good read: “The Proximity Principle” by Ken Coleman.
“If you want to turn your goals into reality faster, then get yourself in proximity with people who are playing the game at a higher level than you do.”
