Thought for the Week – Our Learning Journey

learning-journey

I hope you are having a great week so far.

Last week’s thought was; “Your Inner Animal Wisdom” about how we can learn more about ourselves by thinking of an animal whose characteristics are most like our own. You can see this and all of my previous blogs HERE.

If you did the exercise I mentioned, I’d love to know how you got on, so drop me a line!

Leading on from last week’s thought, what other situations have come about where you have learned more about yourself and your own communication style?

The thing is; these days we are so busy aren’t we that we can miss the opportunity, so it passes us by unnoticed. It’s only when we have to stop in our tracks and take note that we have the chance to pick up on it!

Some may keep a journal or make notes in other ways. Personally, I have learned to make a mental note and store anything important digitally. I also write my weekly blog after processing things that have come up over the week.

When I run courses and talk about how we learn, I often use the metaphor of learning to drive or ride a bike. At the beginning, we thought it was easy, for instance watching our parents driving when we were a kid, it looked so easy didn’t it?

That stage of learning is called “Unconscious Incompetence”. That doesn’t sound very flattering does it, but it is of course a psychological term! Simply put; We don’t know what we don’t know.

Then when we get on a bike for the first time, or have our first driving lesson, we realise there is so much more to this thing! (“Conscious Incompetence”), we realise that we don’t know how to do it. We concentrate on every little stage, starting up, changing gears, highway code and all that.

Then when we start getting the hang of it, this is called “Conscious Competence” – we know what to do now and that we can do it. And this stage is critical. Why?

Because it’s only through repetition and practice that we really instil this knowledge onto our consciousness, so it then permeates into our sub-conscience and becomes automatic. Like when we learned to walk.

So, when we’re driving and have reached that last stage, we realise that sometimes we have travelled from A to B and don’t remember the journey, or changing gear etc. because the whole thing has become so automatic! I’m sure you can relate to that!

This whole process is called “The Learning Journey”.

“The more you learn, the more you realise how much you don’t know”

-Aristotle-

So, learning how to communicate is no different. We have learned to communicate the way we do now and how’s that working for you?

If you, or someone you know, would like to explore this with me, why not book a Complimentary Communication Mastery Call with me? I can confidently guarantee that you will leave this call with more clarity and insight.

I’ll be in touch again soon with more thoughts and tips!

With best wishes for your success,
