Thought for the Week: Breaking Free from Controlled Narratives

seagull-freedomI trust this email finds you well and in good spirits. Last week’s Thought for the Week was; “Context Matters ” about creating meaningful communication through listening, understanding, and responding thoughtfully.

If you haven’t had the chance to see it yet, you can catch up on this and all my previous blogs below.

In the hustle and bustle of our lives, how often do we take a moment to reflect on the narratives that shape our experiences?

This week, I invite you to join me in exploring the concept of controlling narratives and the liberating power of embracing our true, authentic selves. In a world where external forces often attempt to dictate our stories, it becomes crucial to recognise the strength within us to break free from these imposed narratives.

Whether it’s societal expectations, peer pressure, or the desire for external validation, we all encounter moments when the script seems to be written by others. However, the thought for this week encourages us to reclaim authorship over our lives.

Consider the moments when you felt compelled to conform to “societal norms” or when external influences tried to define your identity.

These instances, though challenging, can offer opportunities for growth and self-discovery. By acknowledging our unique experiences, perspectives, and aspirations, we pave the way for an authentic narrative that reflects the true essence of who we are.

So, let’s challenge ourselves to question the narratives that surround us …

  • Are they aligned with our values, passions, and aspirations?
  • Are we living a story that resonates with our authentic selves?

It’s a journey of self-reflection and, at times, a courageous act of rewriting the script to better align with our inner truth.

As we navigate the week ahead, how about striving to be the authors of our own stories, embracing the authenticity that comes with defining our narrative? In doing so, we not only empower ourselves and communicate far more powerfully, we also contribute to a world where diverse stories coexist, enriching the tapestry of the human experience.

Have you ever read the book; “Jonathan Livingstone Seagull” by Richard Bach?

He spoke of very simple things- that it is right for a gull to fly, that freedom is the very nature of his being, that whatever stands against that freedom must be set aside, be it ritual or superstition or limitation in any form. “Set aside,” came a voice from the multitude, “even if it be the Law of the Flock?” “The only true law is that which leads to freedom,” Jonathan said. “There is no other.

Why, Jon, why?” his mother asked. “Why is it so hard to be like the rest of the flock, Jon? Why can’t you leave low flying to the pelicans, the albatross? Why don’t you eat? Son, you’re bone and feathers!” “I don’t mind being bone and feathers mom. I just want to know what I can do in the air and what I can’t, that’s all. I just want to know.

For most gulls it was not flying that matters, but eating. For this gull, though, it was not eating that mattered, but flight.

Look with your understanding, find out what you already know, and you’ll see the way to fly …

“You have the freedom to be yourself, your true self, here and now, and nothing can stand in your way”
